Laverne H. (Huffman) Smith, age 89, of Cortland, died at 6:45 pm Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. She was born September 27, 1919 in Vienna the daughter of the late Frank and Bertie (Lindsay) Huffman. She was a lifetime area resident. Laverne was a 1937 graduate of Fowler High School. She worked for Hull Manufacturing for 31 years retiring in 1986. She was a member of Cortland United Methodist Church for over 60 years. Laverne enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, sewing, quilting, reading and the outdoors. She made afghans for several years for children at Tod's Childrens' Hospital. She bowled on area bowling leagues for 40 years. Laverne loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her husband, William Jefferson "Smitty" Smith, whom she married May 16, 1942, preceded her in death May 22, 1982. One son, Jeffrey Alen Smith, four sisters, Grace Gifford, Evelyn Haible, Frances Miller and Catherine Siembieda and two brothers, Leroy and Kenneth Huffman have also preceded in death. She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Jean Vuich of Farrell, Pa.; two grandsons, Shon Donald (Ally) Gordon and Jason Cory (Grisel) Gordon; four great grandchildren, Kylie and Graycee Gordon and Cory and Dylan Gordon and four sisters, Leona Bates of Cortland, Laura Sandor of Howland, Mildred Eshbaugh of Fowler and Helen Carlton of Cortland. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:30 am Wednesday. A funeral service will follow at noon at the Cortland United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, with Pastor David Vensel officiating. Burial will be at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna. Memorial contributions may be made to the memorial fund at the Cortland United Methodist Church, 155 N. High St., Cortland, Ohio 44410.
