Lt. Col. Walter Bombeck Jr.

Walter Bombeck Jr. of Brookfield, OH, died Saturday afternoon November 28, 2009 at his home. He was 89 years old. Mr. Bombeck was born in Dayton, OH on April 6, 1920 a son of Walter J. and Jewel (Thompson) Bombeck. A 1940 Graduate of Sharon High School, Walter attended the Phillip University in Enid, OK before enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps. on February 3, 1941. He graduated from Pilot Training as a Staff Sergeant on November 10, 1942 and became known as one of the "Flying Sergeants". He received many commendations and citations during his service including the Air Medal for his participation in more than 63 missions as a pilot of a B-25 aircraft against the enemy in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during World War II. Lt. Col. Bombeck served also in Japan during the Korean Conflict and was also awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for his service as a Missile Commander during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He went on to serve for 24 years with the United States Air Force before his retirement in 1964 attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. After his military career, Walter returned to his home and continued his flying career with Beckett Aviation at Youngstown Airport until his retirement in 1985. In his spare time, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, playing golf, fishing and most of all enjoyed spending time with his family. Lt. Col. Bombeck leaves his wife the former Dorothy Reinhart whom he married October 16, 1944 and shared sixty-five years of marriage; his three sons Major (Ret.) Jeffery Bombeck and his wife Patricia of Plattsburg, NY, Gregory Bombeck and his wife Cynthia of Eagle Creek, AK, and Magistrate Scott Bombeck and his wife Kimberly of Brookfield, OH; thirteen grandchildren Seth, Sara, Josh, Abraham, Khristian, Hjalmar "Roo", Tui Marie, Walter, Gregory, Kenneth "Ike", Jens, Christopher and Samantha; five great-grandchildren; and a half-brother Robert Bombeck of Sharpsville, PA also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Mary Hardman, and his step-sister Violet Stuard. Calling hours will be held from 5PM to 7PM Friday evening December 4, 2009 at the Lane Funeral Homes Madasz Chapel in Brookfield, OH. A Military Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 10:30AM at the funeral home provided by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard. Burial will be in Brookfield Township Cemetery.
