Marjorie J. Briggs

Marjorie J. Briggs, of Austintown, passed away at 5:45 p.m. Friday, January 7, 2011 in Briarfield Manor in Austintown. She was 87 years old. Mrs. Briggs was born on August 27, 1923 in Ashtabula the daughter of the late Earl and Theodora (Fuelling) Bumstead and was a graduate of Johnston High School. Mrs. Briggs was a customer service representative with Sears and retired in 1983. She previously worked for the Erie Railroad. She was a member of the Erie Railroad Retirees, Red Hat Society, Chit Chat Club of Johnston, Calon Lan Welch Club, Erie Mahoning Valley Railroad Association, Sears Friendship Club and the Flora MacDonald Auxillary. She enjoyed reading, traveling and music. She also enjoyed birds, bird watching and nature. Mrs. Briggs was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and sang in the church choir. Mrs. Briggs is survived by her son Richard (Mindi) Taylor-Briggs of Huntsburg, Ohio; a brother Fred Bumstead of Cortland and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mrs. Briggs was preceded in death by her husband Carl R. Briggs whom she married on September 29, 1946; a brother Roger Bumstead and a sister Lucille Penney. There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service celebrating Mrs. Briggs life will take place on Saturday, January 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church, 6262 Youngstown Kingsville Road, Johnston, Ohio 44417. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Johnston Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions take the form of donations in Mrs. Briggs' name to either the Warren Wilson College P.O. Box 9000 Asheville, NC 28815, Canfield Presbyterian Church 140 West Main St, Canfield, Ohio 44406, Angels for Animals 4750 West South Range Road, Canfield, Ohio 44406, Salvation Army 1501 Glenwood Ave, Youngstown, Ohio 44502. Mrs. Briggs' family was cared for by the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.
