Mary E. Palmer

March 17, 1932 — August 9, 2014

Lake Milton- Funeral Services will be held at 11am on Sat. August 16, 2014 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown, 5797 Mahoning Ave., for Mary E. Palmer, 82 who passed away peacefully in hospice on Sat. August 9, 2014. She is survived by her three sons Mike, Jim and Tom from her first marriage to Eli Romick (deceased Nov. 1988). Interment will take place at the Vaughn Cemetery, Pine Drive off Grandview Road in Lake Milton. Born in Cleveland on St. Patrick's Day, March 17, 1932 to LaVerne and Florence Locke, Mary, her older brother, Donald Locke (deceased May, 2003) and younger brother, William Locke (deceased March 2002) lived in Ashtabula for a brief period before the family settled into a lakeside home in Lake Milton where Mary became a lifelong resident. A 1950 graduate of Jackson-Milton high school, Mary furthered her education and received her undergraduate teaching degree in 1968, with the concentration in Special Education from what then was Youngstown College and later her Master's degree in 1972 from Youngstown State University. Mary was pursuing her her doctorate at the University of Akron before her retirement from teaching. Mary's teaching career began in 1968 as a substitute teacher at the old Milton Elementary School leading to a permanent position for two years teaching junior high students at the Southeast Local School District in Portage County before coming back to the Jackson-Milton Local School District to teach junior high special education until her eventual retirement in 1997. In retirement, Mary traveled the United States, Europe and Japan by herself, with colleagues and friends on package tours sponsored by YSU and by following the exploits of her sons' educations, travels and careers. However, she was always glad to come back "home" to her cozy ranch-style house on the lake. Friends may be received Sat. Aug. 16, 2014 from 9 until the time of services at 11am at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown. In lieu of flowers (which mom was allergic to anyway), the family asks that contributions be made to a worthy Alzheimer's organization of your choosing. Thank you. Arrangements have been entrusted to The Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel (330) 744-2289
