– A mass of Christian burial will be held 10 AM Monday in St. Michael Church for Mercia Catherine Miner, 85 of Canfield who passed away Tuesday at Humility House. Mercia was born April 29, 1922 in Auckland, New Zealand the daughter of Albert and Ivy (Akersten) Jacobs. She moved from New Zealand to Steubenville Ohio in 1945 and from Steubenville to Canfield in 1982. She retired from the Jefferson County Technical Institute in Steubenville in 1982 as a secretary after 12 years of service. She was a member of the church, its Altar Guild, a former member of the choir and worked in the sacristy of the church. Mercia was also in the Youngstown Symphony Chorus, and was a former volunteer with Meals on Wheels in Youngstown. In Steubenville Mercia was a member of St. Pius the 10th Church where she was the choir director. She was also a member of the Civic Choral Society and the Garden Club in Steubenville. Mercia was an avid gardener. Her husband, Eugene Miner, whom she married April 2, 1945, passed away in May of 1972. She leaves three children; Margaret (Loren) Mitchell of Canfield, Leo (Sheila) Miner of Ahwahnee CA, and Eugene Miner of Fresno CA, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Besides her husband and parents, Mercia is preceded in death by one brother Rex Sayers. Family and friends may call from 2 to 5 PM Sunday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel. In lieu of flowers the family requests material tributes take the form of donations to the St. Michael Church Family Life Center in Mercia’s name.
