Merl F. Hoyle

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial 10 AM Thursday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Canfield for Merl F. Hoyle, of Canfield, who passed away Sunday afternoon at his home. He was born August 9, 1923 in North Benton the only son of the late Earl C. and Ella G. Hartzell Hoyle. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Canfield, graduated from Sebring High School in 1941, and attended Muskingum College. He was a B-24 Bomber co-pilot and a German POW during WWII, then graduated from Mt. Union College in 1949. He sold construction and mining equipment for W.W. Williams Co., and Ohio Machinery Co., retiring in 1985. He was also a member of the Mt. Union Alumni Association, the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, the Civil War Round Table, the World War Two Heritage Group, AX- POW, 466th Bomb Group Assoc, Second Air Division Assoc, and 43-K Aviation Cadet Assoc. Merl was a former member of Colony Club and a former Trustee of the Villas at the Preserves. He married Jean Hasse September 16, 1950, and she passed away August 30, 1993. He leaves his second wife Patricia Darney Jones whom he married April 2, 1997; two sons: Thomas F. (Michele) Hoyle of Upper Arlington, and J. Brian Hoyle of Canfield; one sister Helen Weir of Alliance; two grandchildren: Caroline and Patrick Hoyle; six step children: Kasey Jones of Atlanta, GA, Laurie (Kevin) Best of Manlius, NY, Mark (Becky) Jones of Columbus, Eric (Deirdre) Jones of Cardington, Dr. Brian (Krista) Jones of Wadsworth, and Craig (Maura) Jones of Rochester, NY; and fourteen step grandchildren. Besides his parents and first wife, Merl is preceded in death by two sisters: Vallaise Bullis, and Ruth Phillips; one step son William Jones, and a step granddaughter Clare. Memorial contributions may be made to Forum Health at Home Hospice, 8747 Squires Lane, Warren, OH 44484, the Canfield Presbyterian Church or a charity of the donor’s choice. Friends may call from 5 PM until 8 PM Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel, where closing prayers will be recited at 9:40 AM Thursday.
