McDonald- Funeral services will be held 1 PM Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home-Mineral Ridge Chapel for Merle (Bob) E. Clawson, age 82 of McDonald who was called home to be with the Lord June 20th at his home outside where he loved to be. Pappy was born Dec. 7, 1925 in Hastings, Pa to Jacob and Mary (Ashcraft) Clawson. He served with pride in the U.S. Army in WWII and was a member of the 579th Forward Observation Battalion in General Patton's Third Army. During the Normandy Invasion, his unit served in campaigns in Belgium and Luxembourg, where he received two purple hearts for wounds received during combat operations. Pappy's other medals include the European American Middle Eastern Campaign, the European Victory Medal, the German Occupational Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and several Marksmanship Medals. He retired from Youngstown Sheet and tube in 1980 with 32 years, serving as a craneman. Preceding him in death where his parents, a son Robert, two brothers, Hank and Claire Clawson and three sisters Agnes Longnecker, Maude DeyArmin and Nellie Collins and his wife Elverda who died in February of 2000. "Pappy", as he was known by all who loved him, will be missed every day by his three children, Mary Jane (Warren) Cintron, David (Linda) Clawson and Patricia Pustay, all of McDonald. He also leaves six grandchildren, Tina (Chris) Ellis, Jeff (Jodi) Cintron, David Clawson, Steve and Robert Pustay all of McDonald and Sonya (Curt) Gregg of Virginia. Seven great grandchildren; Michael, Victoria, Michaela, Tyler, Alex, Anthony and Jacob. They were all a joy to him. Merle leaves two wonderful brothers, James (Flo) Clawson of Burghill and Lewis (Eleanor) Clawson from Youngstown. We will miss our Pappy. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5-8 PM Monday. The family requests that material contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley.
