A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 15th at 10:30 AM at St. Mary's Church, Mineral Ridge, for Michael Popp who passed away on Tuesday, September 11th at his home. Michael was born in Howland, the fourth son of Joseph and Bertha Popp, on February 10, 1925. After moving to Niles, he went through St. Stephen's primary and Edison Jr. Middle School, and attended Niles McKinley High School, graduating in 1943. He served as an altar boy at St. Stephen Church during his attendance at that school. He boxed for Mat McGown during his high school years, later winning the Golden Gloves Championship in Cleveland. Michael joined the Navy in 1943. He was assigned to the SS Nevada where he served as a Fire Controlman in the Pacific and later the Atlantic theater. He continued his boxing career throughout his time in the Navy. After 1945, he attended Ohio University and married Gloria Watkins in 1950. They had three children, Leslie of Columbus, Michael, deceased, and Jeffery of Austintown. Michael also leaves behind three grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Michael loved his family, his home and his St. Mary's Church where he joined in 1950 after marriage. He was active in church as a lay reader and later as an instructor. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, and sewing. Friends may call Friday from 5 to 7 PM at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Mineral Ridge Chapel. He will be buried at Kerr Cemetery beside his beloved son Michael E. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Hospital for Children
