Myron Brobst

Austintown – Myron William “Fritz” Brobst passed away on September 9, 2009 with his family at his side, following a brief battle with cancer. Fritz was born on April 12, 1920 the son of the late Harmon M. Sr. and Flora (Koby) Brobst. Fritz was a lifelong resident of West Austintown, graduating from Austintown Fitch in 1938. Following graduation he entered into the trades becoming a carpenter, and was a member of Carpenter’s Local No. 171 for nearly 70 years. As Fritz progressed in his trade he became the General Foreman for Young & Associates. Later he became General Foremen of Ruhlin Construction culminating his career with the construction of Maag Library at YSU, retiring in 1982. Fritz was a veteran of WWII, proudly serving his country in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer. The majority of his enlistment was spent aboard the USS Monterey. Having received a multitude of medals and awards Fritz also survived over 12 major naval engagements, and had the honor of being present for the signing of the treaty in the Sea of Japan. Fritz always had a passion for sports. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Ohio State Football fan, as well as enjoying fishing, golfing, and bowling. He was also a co-owner of the former Hy-Skore Bowling Lanes in Austintown for 41 years. Fritz was very proud to have bowled a 300 game in 1970, and have a hole-in-one in 1994 at Lakeside Golf Course. Fritz was active in many social and community organizations. He was a charter member of the Meander Lodge No. 765 F. & A.M., the Aut-Mori Grotto, and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Youngstown 32nd Degree, and was proud to have received his 50 year pin. He was also a member of the Austintown Community Church, Austintown Historical Society, the Saxon Club, and a charter member of Chief Petty Officers Club of America. Fritz is survived by his daughters; Lynn E. Jacobs of Canfield and Laraine K. (Edward) Villone of Struthers, as well as his grandchildren Major Nathan P. (Jennifer) Jacobs of the U.S. Army stationed in Virginia, Margo L. Jacobs of Canfield, and Jenna M. Villone of Struthers. Besides his parents Fritz was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Margaret (Burton) Brobst, brothers; Harmon M. Brobst Jr., Howard E. Brobst, and sisters; Thelma Jane Brobst and Iva L. Brobst Kramnick. A memorial service will be held on October 9, 2010 at Austintown Community Church. Family and friends may call from 10 to11am prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests material tributes take the form of donations to the Margaret Brobst Scholarship Fund c/o ASECU, 1690 South Canfield-Niles Road, Youngstown, OH 44515 in Fritz’s name, or to the Austintown Community Church.
