Tributes Date: 2/18/15 Naomi J. Garver, Age 92 Columbus: Services will be held at 11am on Saturday February 21, at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Anstrom Chapel, 8387 Tod Ave. in Boardman, OH for Naomi J. Garver, 92, formerly of Youngstown who passed away February 13 at Friendship Village of Dublin. Family and friends may call an hour before the service beginning at 10am, and are asked to wear something blue (Naomi's favorite color). Naomi was born July 19, 1922 in Youngstown, OH the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Gething) Joerndt. A 1940 graduate of South High School, Mrs. Garver received a bachelor's degree from Youngstown College in 1944, and after initially working as a teacher, began her library career at Beaver Township Library, North Lima, OH. She served at a number of Mahoning County libraries, received a Master's in Library Science degree from University of Pittsburgh in 1970, and retired in 1981 as Head of the Readers Assistant Program at the Main Library in Youngstown. Naomi continued to substitute for the libraries and at Choffin School of Practical Nursing library until 2002. She was a long-time member of Brownlee Woods UP Church, and active in the Masonic bodies in Youngstown (Past Matron of Miriam Chapter #278 Order of Eastern Star). Naomi also was an active participant in local & national Welsh clubs (Welsh American St. David Society of Mahoning County; Calon Lan Women's Welsh Club -Past Pres. / Trustee; National Welsh Woman of the Year 1994; Life member of the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association) and a former resident of Glenellen Senior Living Community in North Lima. Mrs. Garver moved to the Columbus area in 2009, where she participated in resident governance and the library committee at Friendship Village of Dublin. Surviving her are her sons, Thomas R. (Christine) Garver, of Columbia, MD, and Douglas A. (Janis) Garver of Hilliard, OH; a sister, Vivian Cook of Struthers; a sister-in-law, Louise Joerndt of Youngstown; 3 grandchildren, Matthew Garver of Baltimore, MD, Amy (Matthew) McLaughlin of Blacklick, OH, and Bryan (Jennifer) Garver of Olmsted Falls, OH; and 4 great-grandchildren Madison, Macie, and Sutton Garver and Daniel Solis (McLaughlin), as well as many loving nieces and nephews. She'll also be missed by many family friends and caring residents and staff at Friendship Village of Dublin. Preceding her in death besides her parents are her beloved husband of 57 years, Robert J. Garver; 5 sisters: June Joerndt, Orrilla Schuller, Ruth Veith, Esther Zarbaugh, and Elizabeth Young; 2 sisters-in-law Virginia Veith and Gloria Joerndt; 3 brothers: Paul Veith, William Joerndt, and Carl Joerndt; and 4 brothers-in-law: Ernest Schuller, George Zarbaugh, John (Archie) Young, and John Cook. Mrs. Garver enjoyed playing cards, travel (especially to Wales), collectibles, Boston bull terriers, and geneology. An avid reader, she loved to instill the joy of reading in others. Naomi took particular delight in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who fondly called her "Grandma Noni". She will be buried alongside her husband at Forest Lawn cemetery. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to Friendship Village of Dublin 6000 Riverside Dr. Dublin, OH 43017 or a charity of your choice.
