Nina May Yerke

May 23, 1918 — July 7, 2016

Nina May Duncan Yerke died peacefully in her sleep on July 7, 2016 near Charlotte, NC where she had lived with her son Bryan and his family since 2009. She was born May 23, 1918 in Casey, Illinois to Aaron H. Duncan and Bessie Krauss Duncan, who preceded her in death, the second youngest of their children. She is survived by one sister Madgealine Denney of St. Mary's, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Ernest Yerke, and siblings Harold Duncan, Maurine Horger, and Sherman Myers. Her mother, Bessie, died when she was almost two years old, and her foster parents Ulysses and Augusta Claus McDermitt took her into their home and hearts and raised her as their own daughter in the St. Mary's, Ohio area. Two foster brothers, Clinton and Albert McDermitt, preceded her in death. Clinton's son Melvin McDermitt of St. Mary's, Ohio, survives her, and Clinton's daughters, Betty Rable and Marilyn Jones, who were like sisters to Nina also preceded her in death. Upon marrying Ernest Yerke, Nina spent the majority of her life residing in Lordstown, Ohio. She is survived by her children, Ronald Yerke, Linda Yerke, and Bryan Yerke and spouse Judy MacCallum Yerke, as well as grandchildren Terri Bogan, Amy Petcoff, Christopher Yerke, Aaron Yerke, Corrina Yerke, and step grandchildren Natalie Elting, Robbie Elting, Phillip Elting, and Lisa Elting Jordan. She was preceded in death by granddaughter Michelle Yerke. She also had five step great grandchildren, 3 step-great-great-grandchildren, and 2 step-great-great-great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews by her brother Sherman Myers, sister Madgealine Denny, and sister Maurine Horger, many relatives in her extended foster family, who still reside in the St. Marys, Ohio area, and nieces and nephews by marriage to her husband Ernest Yerke who reside in the Lordstown/North Jackson area. Final arrangements are being handled by Lane Family Funeral Homes, Lane Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Avenue, Youngstown, Ohio 44415, 330-744-2289. There will be viewing hours on Tuesday, July 12, 2016 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and a graveside service on Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at 11:00am at Jackson Township Cemetery, 1103 N. Salem-Warren Rd., North Jackson, Ohio 44451. She will be interred next to her husband of 61 years Ernest Yerke who predeceased her in 1998. If desired, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Samaritan's Purse (samaritanspurse.org) or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org) in Nina's honor.
