Oscar W. Grant, age 89 of Johnston, Ohio, died on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 3:21 PM at the Ashtabula County Medical Center. He was born in Mecca, the son of the late Lawrence S. and Dollie Cozad Grant. Mr. Grant was a graduate of Johnston High School and also received a BA Degree from YSU, and then furthered his education by receiving a Master of Education. He was a teacher for 33 years in the Maplewood Local Schools, retiring in 1987; and he also taught at Victory Christian School for 20 years. Some of his likes included gardening and playing cards, but, his passion was the love of coaching and officiating the sport of track and cross country. He coached and officiated, not only at Maplewood but also at Victory Christian School. He was a member of the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church, he was also a Pastor with West Williamsfield Congregational Church for eight years, the Mahoning Valley Track Officials, and he was also a trustee for Johnston Twp. Oscar was an honorably discharged US Army Veteran of WWII; he also was a longtime member of the Johnston VFW. Survivors include his wife, the former Catherine Nicholas, whom he married on December 31, 1949; seven children, Lawrence (Nan) Grant of Fort Worth, Texas, Clifford (Sonny) Grant of Guatemala, Ronald (Christine) Grant of Madison, Ohio, Frank Grant of Phoenix, Arizona, Darlene (Robert) Bissell of Cortland, Ohio, Brenda (Barry) Autry of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and Ralph (Rebecca) Grant of Cedarville, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Paulene Swisher of Howland, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at 10:45 AM beginning with the military service followed by the religious service at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, where Pastor Joel Dickson will celebrate Oscar's life. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home from 1:00 5:00 PM, Sunday, September 14, 2014. Burial will be in the Johnston Cemetery Chapel.
