Ray L. Barto

Ray L. 'Sonny' Barto, State Route 46, Cortland, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, May 16, 2006 with his family by his side. He was born on March 31, 1922, in Johnston, Ohio, the son of Marcus and Donia (Lyons) Barto. Ray was a 1941 graduate of Johnston, Ohio High School. He served in the Marines during World Way II, seeing action in the South Pacific. Upon discharge from the Marines, Ray was employed at Packard Electric retiring after 45 years of service as an oiler. On October 20, 1950 he married the former Hazel Keeley. Ray & Hazel lived their entire married life in Mecca Township. He attended Greene Church of the Nazarene. Throughout his life, Ray was an avid sports lover. He played on numerous basketball and baseball teams in the area, then later went on to coach girls basketball & softball teams in the area. Besides his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory, Two daughters, Lynda (Rand) Chronister of Cortland and Keeley Benedek of Mantua, Ohio. Five Grandchildren: Jeff (Anastasia) Benedek, Kristy Benedek and Joy Benedek, Scott Chronister and Matt Chronister and a sister Mary Barto of Johnston Twp., OH. He was preceded in death by his parents and several brothers and sisters. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel, 164 North High Street, Cortland, Ohio, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM - 8:00 Pm, Thursday, May 18, 2006. Services will be Friday, May 19, 2006 at 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
