Robert A. Rose

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the Canfield Presbyterian Church, 140 W. Main St. in Canfield for Robert A. Rose, retired Bank executive and Canfield Fair Official who died Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Rose was born April 21, 1926 in Canfield, the son of Thad C. and Florence M. Rose. A Canfield High School Graduate, he attended Youngstown State and Ohio State Universities and began his banking career in 1950 with the Farmers National Bank. Bob left in 1961 to become the president and Director of the Farmers Savings and Loan Company. He retired in 1985 after merging Farmers with the First Federal Bank of Youngstown. Bob began his fair career in 1954, and served as director until his death. He served as President of the Board during 1964-1965 and as director and treasurer for 48 years. During his presidency, he was instrumental in the formation of the Western Reserve Village on the fair grounds. He was treasurer of the Ohio Fair Managers Association, an organization of 95 fairs in the state of Ohio, for 25 years, retiring in 2002. Mr. Rose served as treasurer of the City of Canfield for nineteen years, retiring in 1969. He was one of the founders of the Canfield Community Improvement Corporation, and served as its treasurer. He was past-president of the Salem Golf Club and a member of the Emporium Country Club, a member of Salem Lodge # 305 B.P.O Elks, American Legion Post # 177, Past President and Paul Harris Fellow of the Rotary Club of Canfield, with 40 years perfect attendance. He was a member of the Argus Lodge #545, Al Koran Shrine, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Youngstown Shrine Club, The Saxon Club, Shaggy Dogs Kennel #2, Canfield Historical Society, and a Kentucky Colonel. He served on the Canfield City Income Tax Review Committee, and was the 25th President of the Canfield Community Club, which his father helped found as was it’s first president. In 1967 he was Canfield’s third Man of the Year. In 1974 he received the Award of Achievement for outstanding contribution to the Fair Industry from the International Association of Fair and Expositions. In 1984, Bob received the President’s Volunteer Action Award from President Ronald Reagan. He was Grand Marshall of the 4th of July Parade in Canfield in 1987. In 1995 and again in 2001 was recognized by the Ohio Department of Agriculture for his outstanding contribution to the success of the Canfield Fair, and his leadership within the Ohio Fair Manager’s Association. Bob served in the United States Navy in WWII and was a member of the Canfield Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife, the former Ruth Kimmel whom he married June 18, 1949, He leaves two daughters: Pat Cochran of Orange Park, FL., and Peggy Jo Reardon of Hudson. He also leaves a brother, Dr. Donald D. Rose and five grandchildren.
