Niles-There will be a funeral service held on Thursday, March 6, 2008 at 8 PM at the Lane Funeral Home Niles Chapel for Robert A. Whitney, 92, who passed away Monday, March 3, 2008 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Robert was born October 9, 1915 in Niles, OH, the son of the late William R. and Alice Sidaway Whitney. He was a 1935 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. Mr. Whitney served in the United States Army during World War II. He was in the 79th Signal Company and 79th Infantry Division. Robert was in Rhineland, Central Europe, Normandy, and Northern France. He received the Good Conduct Metal, and 4 Bronze Stars. Mr. Whitney retired from Packard Electric where he was a foreman. He was a member of the Niles Historical Society, a Red Cross Volunteer, a Niles Community Service Volunteer. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and all sports. Robert is survived by, his wife, Elizabeth V. "Betty" O'Neil Whitney, whom he married July 30, 1959; a sister Mary and her husband Donald James of Bluffton, SC; He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers, Russell, Herbert, and Malcolm Whitney; a sister, Alberta Whitney. Calling hours will be an hour prior to the service Thursday evening.
