Robert H. Eisen

Robert “Bob” Henry Eisen, beloved and devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather and volunteer extraordinaire, passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Thursday evening, May 3, 2006, at Park Vista Retirement Community in Youngstown, Ohio, after a lengthy illness due to congestive heart failure. He was born August 24, 1919, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Bertha and Frank Eisen. He was a long-time resident of Parma, Ohio and Canfield, Ohio, and was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dolores Johnson Eisen, of New Haven, Kentucky. In 1938, he graduated from Rhodes High School and was named to the Ohio All-State High School Football Team in his senior year. Following graduation, he obtained an associates degree from Case Institute of Technology (now Case Western Reserve University) and went to work for the Standard Oil Company, Ohio, (Sohio) before being inducted into the United States Army in 1941. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and served under General George Patton during World War II in support of the successful Allied invasions of North Africa and Italy. He was awarded numerous medals including the Bronze Star, the Good Conduct medal, the American Defense Service medal, and the European African Middle East Service medal with six bronze stars and one bronze arrowhead. He was honorably discharged in 1944 and returned to work with Standard Oil Company, where he held several technical and sales positions. He was an active member of the Sohio Quarter Century Club, and retired from Standard Oil in 1976. After returning from the European front and his discharge from the Army, he married Dolores Johnson in New Haven, Kentucky, on September 22, 1945. He is survived by their three daughters, Pamela Ann Roberts, wife of John L. Roberts, of Hooksett, New Hampshire; Mary Dean (Dee Dee) Archiable-Ritchie, wife of Greg Ritchie, of Ritchfield, Ohio; and Deborah Marie Yoder, wife of Scott Yoder, of Easton, Maryland. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Donald S. Archiable, Sean R. McQueen, Krista L. McCracken, Kathleen E. Wade, Kelly A. Archiable, and Jonathon H. Yoder; and two great-grandchildren, Jack D. Archiable and Charles B. McCracken. He had a life-long commitment of service to his country, state and local communities. While living in Parma, Ohio, he served on the Cuyahoga County Council for Civil Defense, was involved in public relations for the local Republican Party and was active with Junior Achievement. His service to the community continued in Canfield, Ohio, where he was elected Precinct Committeeman for the Republican Party in 1974 and 1976. Following retirement from Standard Oil, his volunteer activity significantly increased with many organizations including the American Heart Association, the American Lung Association, the American Cancer Society and the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). He acted as an arbitrator for the Mahoning County Better Business Bureau, volunteered with the Mahoning County Disaster Services Agency and helped Mahoning County Joint Vocational School students with career development. He was especially active with the American Red Cross, volunteering for numerous disaster relief assignments throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, as well as with the Boy Scouts of America, coaching Eagle Scout candidates and attending several jamborees He was an avid whittler and craftsman, casting and painting miniature figurines and creating many displays of miniature furniture in shadow boxes and to-scale building replicas, and then sharing his craft through presentations and programs for local schools and civic organizations and as an exhibitor at the Mahoning County (Canfield) Fair. He was an active member of the Chatterbox Retired Men’s Club and an often awarded member of the Toastmasters Association. His contributions to the community and his willingness to help and brighten the lives of others will be fondly remembered by all who had the opportunity to meet and interact with him. Visiting hours will be held Sunday, May 7 from noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Lane Funeral Home, 65 N. Broad Street, Canfield, Ohio, followed by a 2:00 p.m. memorial service at the Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be conducted Saturday, May 13 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Catherine Catholic Church, 1741 N. Main Street, New Haven, Kentucky. His remains will be buried beside his wife at the St. Catherine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Canfield American Cancer Society.
