Robert Kercher

Robert J. Kercher, 90 CANFIELD - A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, at the Canfield United Methodist Church, 27 S. Broad St., in Canfield, celebrating the life of Robert J. Kercher, 90, who died, Monday, Aug. 8, at Northside Medical Center. Robert who was born Nov. 14, 1920, in Cass City, Mich., a son of the late Clarence G. and Marion S. Bache Kercher and grew up in Owosso, Mich. He then moved to Flint, Mich. after he married and came to Canfield in May of 1971. Robert served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, 25th Infantry, and Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Stars. Robert was the supervisor of Salaried Personnel at GM Lordstown Fabricating from 1971 until he retired in 1981. He had previously worked in management with Fisher Body Division of GMC in Flint. An Eagle Scout, Robert was actively involved in the Boy Scouts for over 70 years. He served on the Property Committee for Camp Stambaugh and was a District Chairman and Chairman of Camporees at the Greater Western Reserve Council, Stambaugh District, where he was presented the Silver Beaver Award. Robert was an active member of the Canfield United Methodist Church and involved with Operation Blessing Food Bank for over 25 years. He was a founding member of the Western Reserve Woodcarver's Club. He leaves his wife, the former Miriam Shuler, whom he married Jan. 8, 1953; two daughters, Jill A. Kercher of Warren and Julie S. Kercher of Canfield; and two brothers, Harold E. Kercher of Atlanta and Richard J. Kercher of Beulah, Mich. There are no calling hours. The family requests that material tributes take the form of contributions to Operation Blessing, P.O. Box 652, Canfield or the Memorial Fund of Canfield United Methodist Church.
