Robert Q. Buss Sr.

OXFORD-Robert Q. Buss, Sr., of Oxford, Maryland, died Saturday, September 9, 2006 at Forum Health Northside Medical Center in Youngstown, Ohio after battling Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma for 11/2 years. He was 71. Born January 26, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, he was the son of the late Dr. John Aloysius Buss and Clara Vollmers Buss. He graduated from the University of Detroit in 1958 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and later earned a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University. He received a MBA in 1959 from Hofstra University. He founded High Energy Corporation, a manufacturer of high voltage capacitors in Parksburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1961 and was CEO and president for 20 years. During that period he was owner of Brookdale Farm in Elverson, Pennsylvania where he raised Charlot beef cattle. He then specialized in business turn-arounds and presided over Peerless Gear & Engineering, Emtronix and Techtronics all in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin region; Electro-chem in Houston, Tx; Rosedale Printing in Baltimore, and Atek Corporation in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was currently President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Sovereign Circuits in North Jackson, Ohio. He loved sailing and participated in America’s cup trials, raced Star boats internationally, and sailed around the world from 1987-1990 with his wife, Maggie, aboard their 46 ft. cutter sailboat Spellbound. They later sailed in Northern Europe and circumnavigated the Baltic Sea during the summers of 1995-1997. He docked Spellbound in Oxford and sailed extensively on the Chesapeake Bay and East Coast. He was an instrument-rated airplane pilot. He loved wooden boat building, woodworking, projects, and home construction projects. He recently completed building his home “Pinebound” in Oxford working on weekends over the past 5 years. He is survived by his wife, Maggie (Olson), whom he married April 26, 1986; three children, James Guy of Sante Fe, New Mexico; Robert Q. Jr. of Osnabruck, Germany; and Dr. Mary K. Buss Reale of Boston, Massachusetts; three grandchildren Rachel, Rosalia, and Robert Q. III; and brother John William Buss of Abordeau Devon, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Genevieve Ziurys and Evelyn Buss. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1:00 PM Saturday, September 16, 2006 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Easton, Maryland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (www.cbf.org) or to Catholic Charities(www.catholiccharitiesinfo.org). Local arrangements have been entrusted to the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.
