Robert S. Roth , 71, of Austintown, died Wednesday morning after a brief illness. He was born Feb. 5, 1933 in Youngstown, OH to Stephen and Mary Schuller Roth. A 1951 graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, he earned a football scholarship to Newberry College, Newberry, SC, where he met his loving wife Mary MacNeal Roth, and where he earned his B.S. in secondary education in 1955. He later earned his M.S. in educational administration from Westminster College, New Middletown, PA in 1968. Mr. Roth put his degrees to use at his alma mater, Austintown Fitch High School, where he taught government, coached football and served as principal between the years of 1955 and 1988. He was a dedicated and active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Austintown, where he served in the past as president of the church council. Mr. Roth was also an active member of the Saxon Club in Austintown for many years and enjoyed golfing, bocce, gardening, woodworking and reading. Mr. Roth is survived by his wife Mary MacNeal Roth, whom he married July 31, 1954; his two children Sandra Roth Thorndike of Austintown and Stephen Wiley Roth of Austintown; four sisters Elsie Nelle of Boardman, Dorothea Fizet of Austintown, Margaret Strickland of Youngstown, and Ruthann Bloom of Cortland; his brother Thomas Roth of Gold Hill, NC and his four grandchildren Rebecca, Elizabeth, Lezlie and Robert Thorndike. In Lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 162 S. Raccoon Rd., Austintown, OH, 44515. Friends may call at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel from 3-7 PM Sunday and from 10-11 AM Monday at Grace Lutheran Church where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM.
