Ruth Pauline (Nelson) Miller, 86 of Howland passed away on Monday September 15, 2008 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland at 9:30am. Ruth was born in Youngstown on December 23, 1921; the daughter of the late George and Clara (Seifert) Nelson. Ruth graduated from South High, went on to graduate from Hiram and Youngstown Hospital Association School of Nursing. Ruth served our country in the Army as a nurse where she held the rank of 2nd lieutenant during World War II. Following her service time she went on to work for the Youngstown Hospital Association, Hiram College, Veterans Hospital, Methodist Hospital and Blank Children's Hospital; all in Des Moines, IA; the Doctors Hospital in Columbus and was also a member of the National District and State Osteopathic Auxiliaries as well as a member of Howland Community Church. Ruth was very dedicated to the medical profession that when Polio was prevalent she worked as an iron lung specialist in various cities where there were severe outbreaks. Ruth married Dr. Arnold S. Miller on September 2, 1950. Together they shared 58 years of marriage and two children; Dr. Keith (Susan) Miller of Bazetta; and Diane (Robert) Bowman of Niles; five grandchildren Justin, Carissa, Amanda, Travis, and Steven. Special friends Emilia and Richard Obertots and their children Amy and Ryan. Ruth was preceded in death by a brother Jay Nelson and twin sisters, Emma and Josephine Nelson. Funeral services will be Thursday September 18, 2008 at 11am at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel. The family will be receiving friends on Wednesday from 5-7 pm and then again an hour prior to the service on Thursday. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers the material contributions be made to Hospice of the Valley or Howland Community Church.
