Shirley Filisky

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at St. Charles Church in Boardman for Shirley Filisky who passed away Monday afternoon. Mrs. Filisky was born April 18, 1935 in Youngstown, the first child of John F. and Eileen Elizabeth (Horan) Mulholland. She attended St. Columba Grade School, graduated from the Ursuline High School in 1953, and went on to receive a B.S. in Education from Youngstown State University. Mrs. Filisky entered the religious life in the Order of St. Ursula as Sister Jean Elizabeth in 1953, and for many years was highly regarded as an outstanding first grade teacher. She will be remembered for perfecting her innovative style of teaching while teaching at St. Nicholas in Struthers, Our Lady of Lourdes in East Palestine, St. Rose in Girard, Holy Family in Poland, and at St. Charles in Boardman. She left the religious life in 1966. An accomplished artist, musician, and avid reader, she devoted her life to the betterment of others. Shirley retired recently from the Mahoning County Solid Waste District as an environmental educator of recycling and conservation methods. A member of St. Charles Church, she was a former Director and the Vice President for Humanitarian Education and Relief Services, Inc. (H.E.R.S.) She was a former member of Seton III, the Austintown Democratic Women’s Club, and the Garden Club. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, Shirley is survived by her husband S. Richard Filisky, whom she married in 1968, and three daughters: Marybeth Filisky Romeo of Columbiana, Dr. Annemarie Filisky of Denver, CO., and Jeanmarie Filisky of Charlottesville, VA. She also leaves two grand-daughters: Cynthia Marie Romeo and Victoria Grace Romeo, both of Columbiana, as well as her brother Timothy Mulholland of Boardman. Mrs. Filisky was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Frances Eileen Carney Pullium, and a niece Colleen Carney. Memorial contributions may be sent to H.E.R.S. at P.O. Box 9843, Boardman, OH 44513-0843. A not for profit organization dedicated to helping educate the poor in Third World Countries. Friends and family may call on Wednesday from 5-8 PM at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel, where a Rosary service will take place at 8 PM.
