Shirley Jane Planitz

Shirley Jane Planitz, age 71, of Cortland, died Monday, March 3, 2008 of pancreatic cancer at the Hospice House in Poland, OH. She was born on May 7, 1936 in Hamilton, OH., the daughter of the late Stanley J. Williams and the late Myrtle R. (Lantz) Williams. Mrs. Planitz received her Bachelor of Education degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and had worked as a school teacher for 34 years. Shirley retired in 1994 after 22 years with the Maplewood School District. She was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church in Cortland where she was the organist and choir director for many years. Shirley enjoyed traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Douglas L. Planitz, whom she married on August 17, 1957; two sons, David (Susan) R. Planitz of Cortland and Douglas "Mike" Planitz of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Jennifer (Craig) L. Clatanoff of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; one brother, Richard (Burma) S. Williams of Pullman, Washington and three grandchildren, Andrew Planitz and Cara and Calvyn Clatanoff. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends on Friday, March 7, 2008 from 6 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2008, at St. Roberts Catholic Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland.
