Sylvia Joseph Newman 95, formerly of Warren, Ohio, passed away Sunday October 18 in Los Angeles, where she has lived since 1985. She was surrounded by family. Sylvia was born on October 4th, 1914 to Nathan (Nick) and Anna (Solomon) Joseph in Youngstown, Ohio. She was joined by a sister, Ethel two years later, immediately followed by a brother, Saul. She lost her mother during the flu epidemic of 1918. She spent her early years in Cleveland where her father was the manager of the Clark Restaurant Chain. Upon high school graduation her father moved the family to Youngstown where he opened his own restaurant. In 1937 she met Max Newman of Farrell Pennsylvania and they were married on February 28th at Squaw Creek Country Club. Sylvia was a dedicated wife, mother and daughter. She was also an active and enthusiastic member the community of Warren, Ohio where the young couple decided to live. As a member of Beth Israel Temple and a president of Hadassah she was instrumental in record fundraising for the group. She was a contract bridge player and shared a love of golf with her husband Max. She successfully ran the Royal Jewelry Company in the 50's. Following the tragic death of younger daughter Pamela (16) in an auto accident Sylvia, working along side Catholic Charities, co- created "Play Ladies". The group was dedicated to giving special care and attention to hospitalized children in the Warren-Youngstown area. Sylvia continued her studies and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Youngstown College Following the death of husband Max in 1981, Sylvia took the next few years to tie up business matters at Newman Seafood of Warren. In 1985 and the urging of daughter Launa, son-in-law, Michael Minson and granddaughter, Whitney she went to live with them in California. In California Sylvia stayed active. She joined Temple Beth Am and became a proud member of the honorary UCLA Plato Society, described by the Wall Street Journal as the nation's best learning and retirement society dedicated to continued intellectual development. She will be dearly missed by her daughter Launa, son-in-law Michael Minson and granddaughter, Whitney Minson Yarosh and her husband Alex.
