Thomas E. Protiva, Age 56, 0f Johnston Twp. died on Friday, May 6, 2011 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren from a short battle with cancer. He was born on April 9, 1955 in Warren, a son of the late Thomas James Protiva and the former Helen Yavelak Protiva-Adams. Tom worked as a self employed contractor for many years operating under the name of TEP Co., specializing in excavating. Tom was proud to be an Eagle Scout & loved music. He was an avid NASCAR fan and liked fast boats, cars, motorcycles and snowmobiles. He loved spending time in the outdoors. He enjoyed landscaping his yard, spending time in his garage and around his pond and summer parties. Tom liked to spend time with his family and friends and loved to entertain. He was a very good hearted man with a good soul. He would do anything for anyone. His family and friends meant the world to him. Toms has impacted a lot of people’s lives, and to know Tom was to love Tom. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife, Renee Payne Protiva whom he married on November 17, 2001; his mother, Helen (Bob) Adams of Fowler and by two brothers, William (Deborah) Protiva of Vienna and Steven (Karen) Protiva of West Farmington, as well as several nieces and nephews. Tom was preceded in death by a sister, Cathy Protiva-Stein and a brother, Michael Protiva. The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 5pm – 7pm at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. A memorial service will be held for Tom at 7pm Thursday at the funeral home.
