Thomas John Davis

Thomas J. Davis, 71 of Cortland, died Sunday evening, September 22, 2013, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was born February 20, 1942 in Girard the son of the late Richard Thomas and Rema Louise Love Davis. He had been a Trumbull county resident most of his life, living in Howland for many years before moving to Cortland in 1993. Tom was a 1960 graduate of Girard High School, where he had been on the golf and tennis teams. He attended Youngstown State University and training for a diploma in electronics repair from U.S. Steel Corp, which he was awarded in 1971. Also, in 1989, he received certification in instrument repair from ETI. Tom worked in the steel industry for 42 years, formerly working at U.S. Steel and retiring in 2004 from the Republic-LTV coke plant where he was an electronics technician for 20 years. He held patents in the steel industry and was an accomplished inventor. Tom was of the Methodist faith. He was a member of Wick masonic Lodge No. 481 and the Scottish Rite Valley of Youngstown. He was an avid golfer and had golfed on leagues as a member of the LTV golf team. He enjoyed tennis and woodworking and was an accomplished cabinet and furniture maker. Tom especially loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. His wife of nearly 43 years, Marilyn L. Taylor Davis, whom he married October 26, 1963, preceded him in death June 28, 2006. One sister, Marilyn Davis also preceded in death. Tom is survived by one daughter, Laurie E. Cortman of Sarasota, Fla.; one son, Richard T. (Theresa) Davis of Champion; two grandchildren, Nicolette (Adam Gilger) Davis of Cortland and Thomas Davis of Champion; one great grandson, Peyton Greathouse and one sister, Elizabeth (Bil) Herbein of Columbus. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2013 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the service time at 1 p.m. Masonic services will be held Thursday morning. Burial will be at Dugan Cemetery in Fowler. Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans Trumbull County Chapter No. 11, 2044 Youngstown Road S.E., Warren, OH 44484.
