Thomas Payne, age 65, of Cortland, Ohio, died unexpectedly on Thursday, October 2, 2008. He was born on October 17, 1942 in Warren, the son of the late Kenneth Payne and the late Eleanor (Snow) Payne. Tom was a graduate of Cortland High School and a veteran of the United States Army. He spent 50 years working as a body man at his families auto body shop, Payne Auto Body in Cortland. Tom also worked part-time at M&M Manufacturing in the maintenance dept., in Cortland. As a young man, Tom was a skilled horseman, training and showing horses in Cheyanne, WY. at rodeo events. He was a member of the Cortland Moose Lodge and a member of A.B.A.T.E., Region 0. Tom was a motorcycle enthusiast. He built several custom motorcycles and attended motorcycle rallies all across the United States. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, spending time in the outdoors and was well known in his community for creating Native American art. Tom supported the local veterans through his memberships with both Rolling Thunder and the Paladin Knights. He attended and worked at the Memorial Day weekend event, "The Ride to the Wall", in Washington DC, for three years in a row. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends. Tom is survived by "His Lady", Cynthia "Cindy" Roper of Cortland; two sons, Michael (Connie) Payne of Hickory, NC. and Mark Payne of Florida; one daughter, Erica (Tim) Goodwin of Florida; two brothers, David (Sharon) Payne of Cortland and Gerry (Kay) Payne of Cortland; two sisters, Phyllis (John) Hake of Cortland and Melinda (Tom) Repphun of Cortland. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Nicholas, Michael, Skylar, Chloe, Lily, Parris and Mackenzie. Tom was preceded in death by a sister, Marilyn Payne. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel where the family will receive friends on Monday, October 6, 2008, from 9am - 11am. Memorial services will be at the funeral home at 11am Monday. In lieu of flowers, material contributions can be made to the family.
