Austintown- Funeral services will be held 11 AM Saturday at Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church in Austintown for Verna Mae Deas, age 83 of Austintown who died Sunday afternoon at Briarfield at Ashley Circle. Verna was born June 15, 1923 in Austintown and was the daughter of the late J. George and Inez (Ong) Whetson. She had formerly worked at Lloyds Meat Packing and Carnegie Steel many years ago. She was a member of Tabernacle Evangelical Presbyterian Church where she belonged to the Fellowship Class, Women’s Sewing Group and was instrumental in organizing Kings Kids. Verna was also a member of Miriam Chapter O.E.S., Women’s Federated Club, Clotilda Club, Youngstown Federated Questors Club and had did volunteer work for Western Reserve Care System.. Her husband, Alexander Deas whom she married June 14, 1947 died Jan. 12, 1984. She leaves a daughter Alexis (Thomas) Rentschler of Willoughby Hills, a son Douglas (Sue) Deas of Berlin Center and four grandchildren; Brian (Alisa) Rentschler of Streetsboro, Kelly (Thomas) Sprague of Chesterland, OH, Kyle (Katie) Deas of Milton, Delaware and Ashley Deas of Berlin Center. Verna also leaves two great grandchildren Maelynn and Teagan Sprague. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were her pride and joy of her life. Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her siblings, Vivian Seigfried, Lionel Whetson, Melford Whetson and an infant sister Gwendolyn Whetson. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 Friday evening and one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church. The family requests that material contributions be made to the church.
