Vincent "Ben" S. Giering

January 25, 1923 — February 27, 2015

NORTH LIMA- "Ben" Vincent S. Giering, 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 27, 2015 at Assumption Village. Ben was born on January 25, 1923 in Youngstown, OH, son of the late Norman and Dorthea (Kirkpatrick) Giering. Ben was a U.S. Army veteran and served in North Africa during World War II. After his service, Ben worked for Wean United (formerly United Engineering) for 32 years, retiring in 1984. On December 26, 1944, Ben married the love of his life, Martha L. (Stevens), whom he spent 66 years with until her passing on October 4, 2011. Ben was caring, loving and sentimental. He lived life to the fullest and loved people, and they were drawn to him like a magnet everywhere he went. Ben loved all kinds of music, especially big band and jazz. He and his wife enjoyed dancing. Ben played the organ and the harmonica. During the years he worked at United Engineering, he and the guys at work had their own lunch time band. In his younger days, Ben enjoyed camping at Pymatuming Lake with his wife, and later they built a retirement home there, calling it their "own Little Williamsburg." which they loved. Ben collected and refinished antiques. He loved the outdoors, birds, gardening, and playing golf. He loved the Canfield Fair and went every year. But most of all, Ben will be remembered for his love of family and friends, especially the proud words he always spoke about his grandchildren. Left to mourn Ben's passing is his daughter, Deborah L. Giering; his grandchildren, James Watson, Nicole Giering, and Michael (Amy) Watson; and his great-grandchildren, Courtney Shirilla, Shane Gear, and Alex Watson. In addition to his wife and parents, Ben is preceded in death by 2 sons; Jeffery and Dennis Giering; 2 brothers, Robert and William Giering; and his sister, Shirley Thorpe. The family will receive friends from 4PM-6PM on Monday, March 2 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave. A funeral service will follow at 6PM. Inurnment will take place on a later date at Lake Park Cemetery. The Giering family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Assumption Village for the excellent loving care given to Ben during his time there.
