Virginia Mangold

May 24, 1917 — February 2, 2010

Cortland- Virginia Desmarais Mangold, 92, died Tuesday, 2 February 2010, of natural causes at Shepherd of the Valley, Howland Virginia was born 24 May, 1917, in New York City, New York, a daughter of John H. and Jennie Desmarais. She resided in Cortland since 1983 and also had a home in Winter Haven, FL for many years. She grew up in Northern New Jersey and graduated from Abraham Clark High School in Roselle in 1935 where she was an outstanding student. Following graduation she worked for the Bell Telephone Company in New York City until she met and married the love of her life the late Robert J. Mangold on 31 August 1940 in Grace Lutheran Church, Linden, NJ. Virginia and Robert's early life together was spent in New Jersey where they resided in Jersey City and Hillside. In 1960 ALCAN Aluminum Corporation transferred them from Flemington, NJ, to Warren where they established a home in Howland Corners. They were subsequently transferred to Oswego, NY, where Robert was assistant to the plant manager of ALCAN Aluminum's Oswego Plant, remaining there until 1983 when they retired and returned to Cortland. Virginia was a homemaker, avid golfer, and loved doting on her granddaughters. Survivors include her son Colonel Robert B. Mangold, US Army, (Ret), of Cortland;a daughter, Mrs Christine V. Lee and her husband Gary of Bazetta; three granddaughters, Mrs. Jennie Noble of Lansdale, PA, Mrs Jamie Gilliom of Columbus, OH, Mrs. Karen Davidson of Fredericktown, OH ;and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister Helen Quadt of Claremont, CA and her brother John of Bowling Green, KY. The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 6, 2010, from 11 AM - 12 PM at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel, 164 North High St., Cortland, Ohio. Funeral Services will be at 12 PM Saturday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park Mausoleum, Vienna.
