Services will be 11 AM Wednesday at the grace Lutheran Church in Austintown for Walter M. Schmidt, 93, of Boardman who passed away Friday morning at Shepard of the Valley care Center. Walter was born March 12, 1914 in Youngstown the son of Michael and Maria (Shanauer) Schmidt. He was a graduate of Girard High School class of 1933. Walter worked as a press operator for General Fireproofing for 34 years, then as a greeter with K-Mart Department Store for 12 years. He was a member of the church and had been a former member of Faith Lutheran Church where he was the Sunday School Superintendent for 30 years. He was also a member of the choir, a member of the Saxon Club, and a member of the Notables singing group. Walter enjoyed stamp collecting and coin collecting. His wife, the former Mildred Bittner whom he married October 2, 1937 passed away December 1, 1993. Walter leaves three children; John (Jeannie) Schmidt of Youngstown, Karl (Carol) Schmidt of Boardman, and Roberta (Donald) Keys of Venice FL, one brother; Karl Schmidt of Cleveland, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Besides his wife, Walter is preceded in death by three sisters; Mary Hendricks, Christine Nestor, and Helen Ritter. Friends may call Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel and again from 10 to 11 AM Wednesday at the Church.
