Warren Harry Burr

Youngstown- Funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel for Warren H. Burr who died Friday morning at his residence. Warren was born March 16, 1935 in Northside Unit of Youngstown Hospital System. Warren was the son of the late Ordwell Perry and Emma (Montgomery) Burr. A 1953 graduate of Boardman High School, he studied music and botany at the Ohio State University and graduated with a B.A. in history from Youngstown University. Warren studied trumpet with Herbert MacPherson and piano with Harold Marsh and Sarah Tolten. At Boardman, he played under J.M. Minteer and Richard S. Bame. IN 1952 he attended the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan where he was a member of the National High School Symphony Orchestra and Symphonic Band. He was first chair first trumpet in the Symphonic Band. At the National Music Camp, his conductors included Dr. Joseph E. Maddy of National Music Camp, Dr. George Wilson of the University of Missouri, Dr. William D. Revelli of the University of Michigan and Lt. Commander Charles Brendler of the U.S. Navy Band. He was also a member of the Youngstown Youth Symphony under Michael Ficocelli. He played with the Norm Reubenfeld and Jack Lewis orchestras and Pascarella’s Band. He was a member of the Ohio State University Marching Band under Jack Evans. Warren was a member of the 338th U.S. Army Band under Tom Ostrander of Ft. Hayes in Columbus, OH where he qualified as an expert marksman. He played taps at a number of Youngstown area military funerals. He was a member of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 86. Warren was employed by the Ohio Works, U.S. Steel in the blast furnace department and sinter plant. He also worked for the Youngstown Vindicator in the advertising department and for Sentinel Safety Supply where he created its name and corporate logo. He worked for Metal Carbides Corporation and Mr. and Mrs. R, Thornton Beeghly. Warren owned and developed Glenwood Safety Supply Company, which served Ohio and the surrounding states. He was an elder in the Hillman St. Church of Christ in Youngstown, an elder in the Church of Christ in Boardman, an elder in Lynkirk Church of Christ in Austintown. He served as treasurer of the Mineral Ridge Church of Christ and was a member of the Come Double Sunday School Class and the Young at Heart Social Group. . Warren had a long-time interest in music, nature, history and railroads. He thoroughly enjoyed fantasy football with its many variations. He was interested in Youngstown and developed a slide presentation on Mill Creek Park and its history. He is survived by his wife Marilyn (Andrews) Burr whom he married November 15, 1986, daughters, Betty Joan and Frank Matthews of Austin, TX., Shelly and Jim Blick of Austintown, sons; James D. Runyon of Euclid, OH. and Thomas Runyon in California, grandchildren; Becky, Bryan, Cody, Jacob, Lucas, Jamie, Matthew, Angela and great grandchildren; Nolan and Natalie. He is also survived by his brother Ordwell and Ann Burr of Warren and their children Perry (Michelle) Burr of Germantown, Md., Rebecca (Steve) Sander of Middletown, OH and four great nieces and nephews Emily and Alexander Burr and Ethan and Jackson Sander. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half brother and his wife Perry and Pauline Burr and two half sisters Alice Kellogg and Anna Hays. Family and friends may call from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Monday at the funeral home. The family requests that memorial contributions take the form of donations to Hospice of the Valley. The committal service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery on Tuesday
