William A. Hunter

William A. Hunter, 94 died Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. He was born January 5, 1921 in Alliance, the son of the late Francis Edmund and Edith Kayler Hunter. Bill was a January 1939 graduate from Alliance High School and from Mount Union College in 1944. He continued his studies at Ohio State University, receiving a Master's degree in 1948 and continuing his doctoral studies for two years. Bill spent his professional life in education as a teacher at Minerva High School, as an elementary principal in Alliance for North Lincoln, Riverside and Rockhill schools, and as assistant principal and principal at Euclid Senior High School in Euclid. He subsequently served as principal of Chagrin Falls High School and as central office administrator in the Maple Heights school system, retiring in 1978. Bill served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy from 1943-46 on an LST ship and as captain of an LSM. He remained a member of the Naval Reserve and was called back to active duty in 1951, where he was Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer in South Korea. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1954. Bill married Vivian Baxter on August 14, 1945 in Alliance. They moved to Euclid in 1957. Besides his school duties, he was active in the community. He served on several on several commissions and as Chairman of the Administrative Council of East Shore United Methodist Church in Euclid, where he was a member. He was also a member of the choir, the Board of Trustees, the Planners class and Men's Club. Bill was also active in the Euclid Kiwanis Club, serving as president in 2000-01. He served more recently as a host at the Henn Mansion. His wife, Vivian, died in 1998. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Alan Purdum of Cortland, OH; three grandsons, Christopher (Kristen) Purdum of Mountain View, CA, Timothy (Suzanne Bullard) Purdum of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Andrew (Barbara) Purdum of Cortland and four great grandchildren, Aylah, Elliot, Kyler and Jaslyn. One sister, Margaret Reisch and three brothers, Frederic, F. Edmond and Robert Hunter all have preceded him in death. The memorial service will be held at a later date at the East Shore United Methodist Church, 23002 Lake Shore Blvd., Euclid, Ohio 44123. Arrangements were entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, OH 330-392-2559.
