William E. Mclain

Youngstown- Funeral services will be held at 11:15 on Wednesday at the Greenford Christian Church for William Edward McLain of Salem, who passed away on Sunday evening at Forum Northside Hospital. Mr. McLain was born July 12, 1914 in Youngstown, the son of William F. and Anna Mae (Rowe) McLain. He was a carpenter for 30 years working for Albin E. Erikson and then Dan Ellis before retiring in 1976. A WWII Navy Veteran, William was a member of the Greenford Christian Church, the Carpenters Union, and was a member of the first undefeated football team of Struthers High School in 1930. He was also an Eagle Scout where he achieved the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Palms. William was a member of the Stuthers Odd Fellows and the Rebekah Lodge in Canfield. He was the Past Noble Grand of the Odd Fellows Lodge # 933 in Struthers, was the Past Grand Master of the State of Ohio, served as the District Deputy Grand Master, was a Grand Lodge Representative, was a part of the golf association and participated in the State Bowling Tournament, all for the Odd Fellows and Rebekah lodges. He was also the recipient of the Decoration and Grand Decoration of Chivalry. William was a member of Canton Royal #61, where he was the Past President, the retired Colonel from the Dept. of Ohio, and was Past Secretary of the State. He was also a member of the Phoenix Encampment # 235 where he was Past Chief Patriarch and Past Grand Patriarch. Mr. McLain leaves seven children: DeWayne McLain of Struthers, Gerald McLain of Ellsworth, Robert McLain of Vienna, Barbara Carchedi of New Middletown, Bonnie Channels of Salem, Raymond McLain of Ellsworth, and Gail Esker of Leetonia. He also leaves twenty-two grandchildren, forty-five great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. William was preceded in death by his wife, the former Inez Stiles whom he married on December 20, 1934 and passed away on February 26, 1998. Also, a son William E. McLain Jr, a brother Glenn McLain and a sister Leona McLain, as well as a grandson Tod McLain preceded him in death. Friends may call from 5-8 PM Tuesday as well as from 10-11 AM Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel where an Odd Fellows memorial service will take place at 8 PM tonight.
