William P. Nicastro

William "Bill" P. Nicastro, of Brookfield, passed away at 8:06PM Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Sharon Regional Hospital. He was 86 years old. Mr. Nicastro was born March 31, 1923 in Farrell, Pennsylvania the son of the late Salvatore and Michalene (DePasquele) Nicastro. A 1941 graduate from Farrell High School where he was a Varsity Football Letterman, he continued to be active in sports going on to playing with several local baseball teams and both fast and slow pitch softball teams. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a Private First Class with the 87th Infantry Division which was known as the "Golden Acorn Division". Bill participated in campaigns in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. His decorations and citations included the World Wart II Victory Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and three Bronze Service Stars. He received his discharge for honorable service to his country on December 26, 1945. Following his time in the service Mr. Nicastro went on to work for Sharon Steel Corporation for more than forty-one years. During his time there he worked in the Open Hearth Department and was a Clerk in the Boiler Shop. He served as the Union Representative for the United Steelworkers Local #1193, Recording Secretary, Treasurer, and had held three terms as Past-President of the union. While with the U.S.W. Union, Bill served on several committees such as the International Wage Policy and had been co-chair the Industrial Division of the United Way. In his leisure time, Bill loved to go bowling, camping, fishing, traveling, spending time with his grandchildren and was a member of Brookfield United Methodist Church in Brookfield, OH and the Farrell V.F.W. Post #5286. Bill is survived by is wife, the former Martha F. Ballinger, whom he married on February 26, 1977; his daughter Jean D, Wudl and her husband James of West Middlesex, PA; his step-daughters Carla J. Stidham and her husband Dale of Vienna and Marsha F. Carlo and her husband Gary of Hubbard, OH; one brother Albert Nicastro of Sharon, PA; his sister Mary Sas of Hermitage, PA; and by his three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, and his first wife Helen (Karabincik) Nicastro, Bill was preceded in death by two brothers Sam Nicastro, Edward Nicastro and two sisters Rose Frisco and Serena Franks. Private family calling hours will be held of Friday at the Lane Funeral Home Madasz Chapel, Brookfield, OH. A Private Graveside Service will be held at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Farrell, PA. The family suggests contributions be made to the Brookfield United Methodist Church, PO Box #22 Brookfield, Ohio 44403.
