Catherine "Kay" B. Drawl

Catherine B. (Kachur) Drawl passed away on May 16, 2024 in Cortland, Trumbull County, Ohio at the age of 98. She was born on November 11, 1925 in Smock, Fayette County, Pennsylvania to Slovakian immigrants, John Andrew Kachur and Mary Susan Baran. The Kachur family moved to Mecca, Ohio in 1933, where they started a dairy farm. Catherine was among the last class to graduate from Mecca High School in 1943, before it was leveled to create Mosquito Lake. Kay then was employed as a clerk at Taylor-Winfield in Warren, where she met her future husband, Francis “Frank” Edward Drawl. They were married on May 29, 1954 in Youngstown and built a home on the Kachur family farm, where they raised five children, and later, waves of grandchildren, as lifelong neighbors to her parents, brothers and sister.

Kay appreciated little downtime, and into her nineties still cooked for her beloved family, hosted holiday gatherings, and grew and canned vegetables. She enjoyed puzzles, playing cards, and while she resisted driving a car, she would drive the tractor in her youth baling hay.

Catherine is survived by her children: Mark (Tami) Drawl, Thomas Drawl, Michael Drawl, David (Lori) Drawl, and Elaine (Gary) Broderick. She is also survived by her brother, Thomas Kachur, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-four years, Frank; two daughters-in-law, Sandra Bump Drawl and Deborah Springer Drawl; and her siblings Mary Urchek, John “Katch” Kachur, Joseph Kachur, Michael Kachur, Paul Kachur and Steven Kachur.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 AM Monday, May 20, 2024, at St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Cortland. Calling hours will be from 10:00 AM -11:00 AM prior to the service. Burial will take place at All Soul’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Robert Bellarmine Church, which Kay's family helped construct, and where she was a longtime member.
