Daniel Paul Jagunic

July 24, 1951 — January 24, 2016

Daniel Paul Jagunic passed away peacefully after a brief illness on the evening of Sunday, January 24, 2016. He was surrounded by his family who ushered him to Heaven's gate with loving messages, his favorite music, stories about, and praises for, what he meant to each of them. Dan began life with his parents, Peter and Yolanda Jagunic, in Lorain, OH on July 24, 1951. He moved with them to New Philadelphia, OH in 1956, where he spent his youth, graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1969. He graduated from Kent State University in 1973 with a BA in journalism and a minor in political science. He married his high school sweetheart, June Ellen Page, on August 19, 1972. They were married for 43 years and had two wonderful children, Rachel Jagunic and Michael Jagunic. Dan worked in newspapers, first in circulation at various locations, then as the general manager for the Good News in Middlefield, Ohio. He moved on to independent advertising sales for newspaper church pages with Keister Williams Newspaper Services and also provided charitable support to both sheriff and police departments across three states through calendar sales. He excelled in the advertising field and his wife even said he was so good that he could sell ice cubes to Eskimos! Dan saved the best for what he loved the most: people and sports. His love started at home with his family as a loving, caring husband and an involved father, participating with both kids in baseball, softball, cross country and soccer. If times were tough, he stuck with them no matter what. He was an encourager, a friend maker, and an all-around nice guy. He may have walked into a room as a stranger but he never left the room without having made new friends. His wife called him Mr. Sports! He was a huge fan of the Cleveland Indians, every year believing (at least at the beginning of the season) that they just might win the pennant after all. He loved the original Browns. He was an avid fan of the Lakeview High School Bulldogs football and basketball programs. His wife knew not to schedule anything for Friday nights during football season or Tuesday/Friday nights during basketball season because Dan would be with his best friend Don Harper in the stands. He knew who the kids were, knew their stats, talked to their folks, and even the coach never complaining, always encouraging. Dan was a man of strong faith, having received Jesus Christ as his Savior in 1970. He belonged to, and was treasurer of, the Knights of Columbus Chapter 11646 at St. Robert Bellarmine Church in Cortland. He led and participated in every group project, chairing the annual Entertainment Book Sales and the NCAA Basketball Final Four Raffle raising money that was donated to help disabled kids in Cortland. He also served the church as a Eucharistic Minister and as a member of the Parish Council. He was truly a person who made a difference in many lives. Dan is survived by his mother, Yolanda Jagunic; his wife, June Page Jagunic; a daughter, Rachel (Dan Neal) Jagunic; son Michael (Allison) Jagunic; two grandchildren, Marilyn June Neal and Daniel Robert Jagunic; four siblings, Larry (Janet) Jagunic; Richard (Sonny Sonnhalter) Jagunic; Judi (Mark) Dummermuth; David (Jennifer) Jagunic; three nieces, three nephews, three great nieces, and four great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter Jagunic, and his brother, Thomas Jagunic. Friends and family may call at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts Clark Chapel , 180 Garfield Drive NE, Warren, on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be said on Saturday at St. Robert's Bellarmine Catholic Church, 4659 St. Rt. 46, Cortland, OH at 11 a.m. with visitation time for one hour prior.
