Donald C. Carlson, age 83, of Johnston Twp., died Tuesday, February 20, 2010, at 11:38 PM, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren. He was born on June 17, 1926 in Monon, IN., a son of the late Emery J. Carlson and the late Zelma (Thrasher) Carlson. Donald was a lifetime member of the Johnston Federated United Methodist Church and a 1944 graduate of Johnston High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Korean War obtaining the rank of Sergeant. Prior to his enlistment, Donald had served in the Merchant Marine during World War II. Donald was a past member of the Mapelwood School Board. He was a member of the Johnston VFW #7614 Bailey Barto Post where he had served as past Commander and a member of the Cortland American Legion post 540. Donald was very active with the American Legion having served as a team member for the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard. He retired from General Motors/Packard Electric where he had worked as a Millwright for 38 years and spent most of his life working as a farmer. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. His wife, Flora S. (Barron) Carlson, whom he married on March 8, 1951, preceded him in death on June 14, 2002. He is survived by six sons, Richard (Karen) Carlson of Johnston, Robert (Sharon) Carlson of Johnston, Gordon Carlson of Vienna, Gary (Kelli) Carlson of Champion, Roger Carlson of West Farmington and Jeff Carlson of Johnston. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Eric, Jon and Nicole. Donald was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Carlson and a sister, Mary McClelland. Funeral service will be at Johnston Federated United Methodist Church at 3:00 PM Saturday, February 27, 2010. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Internment will be held at the Johnston Twp. Cemetery at a later date. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland.
