AUSTINTOWN- Herbert Lee Baker Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, September 12 at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, OH. He was born on May 6, 1929 in Knoxville, TN, son to the late Herber L. Baker Sr and Bessie Mae (Holt) Patterson. Herbert was a 1966 Niles-McKinley High School graduate. He went on to work for Packard Electric before joining the United States Air Force, where he was stationed at the Vienna Air Base. Following his service, Herbert worked for GM as a reliability engineer in quality control for 30 years before retiring in 1984. After retiring from GM, Herbert worked for ASC for 10 years. Herbert was a 32nd degree Mason at the Wick Lodge 481, and previously at the Meander Lodge. He was also a member of the VFW. Herbert attended Bethel Assembly of God with his wife and he also was a member of the Warren Toastmasters. Herbert will be remembered for his love of NASCAR and the enjoyment he found building model airplanes, but Herbert's greatest passion in life, was his family. Left to cherish Herbert's memory is his loving wife of 63 years, Norma Jean (Laughlin) Baker, whom he married on December 8, 1951. He also leaves behind his two daughters, Sandra (Michael) Snyder and Cynde (Jim Shahan) Baker; his grandchildren, Michael Snyder Jr., and David (Amie) Snyder; his great-grandchildren, Michael Snyder III, and Matthew (Misty) Snyder; his great-great-grandchildren, Peyton Mendenhall, Elizabeth Snyder, and Izabell Snyder; his brother, Howard (Shirley) Baker; his sister, Marilyn Serotko; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Herbert is preceded in death by his loving mother-in-law, Laura Laughlin, his sister, Harriet Baker Whitt, and his nephew, Mark Baker. The family will receive friends from 5PM-8PM on Tuesday, September 15 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave. Masonic services will take place at the end of calling hours. Calling hours will also be held on Wednesday, September 16 from 10AM-11AM with a funeral service following at 11AM. Entombment will follow at Lake Park Cemetery.
