Howard D. Thompson, 87, of Howland Twp, passed away Tuesday morning, Dec. 29, 2009 at his home surrounded by his family after an extended illness. Born Dec. 7, 1922 in Leetsdale, PA he was the son of the late Howard and Esther (Icenhour) Thompson. A 1940 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, Howard was a veteran of the United States Navy and served as a radioman aboard the USS Virgo in the Pacific during WWII. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Howard returned to the Warren area where he began work at Packard Electric. He retired as a foreman in 1980 after 38 years with the company. Howard enjoyed bowling and swimming. He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church in Niles, was a devoted husband and father and especially enjoyed singing songs to his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Dorothy (Murray) Thompson whom he married Nov. 24, 1944. Together they share 65 years of marriage and five sons. Howard is survived his sons, Fred (Sherry) Thompson of Austintown, George (Sandy) Thompson of Warren, Tom (Theresa) Thompson of Girard, Mike (Paula) Thompson of Brookfield, and Brian (Beth) Thompson of Howland Twp., 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and by a sister Gloria (Frank) Gasper of Mississippi. Family and friends may visit Wednesday evening from 6 until 8PM at the Roberts-Clark Funeral Chapel. Pastor John Weisman will conduct a funeral service on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009 at 11AM at the funeral home. Entombment will take place at the Pineview Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Howard's memory to the Hospice of the Valley at 5000 E. Market Street Suite 19 Warren, OH 44484
