A Funeral Service will be held at 12Noon, Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel for John "Jack" W. Calpin Sr., 80, formerly of Canfield, who passed away Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11:50 a.m. at Masternick Memorial Healthcare Center in New Middletown. John was born November 15, 1930 in Youngstown the son of the late John and Evelyn Lucile (McConnell) Calpin. He was a 1948 graduate of Rayen School and attended Youngstown College, studying Industrial Engineering. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force in Alaska as a flight engineer during the Korean Conflict and received the Good Conduct Medal and the Air Crew Member Badge before being honorably discharged on August 6, 1952. Professionally, John joined the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation in 1956 as a draftsman and later named Vice President of Engineering, a position he held until his retirement in 1985. During his career, shopping center development spanned the evolution from the small strip centers to enclosed super regional malls. During his tenure, he was considered one of the foremost design authorities in the shopping center industry. John was deeply devoted to his family, loved to cook, watch the History channel and was a fanatic about his cars. His wife of 54 years, the former Janet L. Timmerman, passed away October 6, 2008. John leaves to cherish his memory seven children: Kymm (Tim) Hanrahan of Geneva, Fl, Kathe Calpin of Ponte Vedra, Fl, Deborah (Thom) Urwin of Tampa, Fl, John W. Calpin, Jr. and Jim (Gina) Calpin all of Boardman, Kelley (Kevin) Blair of Washington Courthouse, Ohio and Chris (Stephanie) Calpin of Mason, Ohio. John also leaves twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two nephews and a niece. Besides his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a sister Patty Jo Mitchell. Family and friends may call on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of service in the funeral home. A graveside committal service with full military honors will take place on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Boardman. The family wishes in lieu of flowers, material contributions be made in memory of John to the American Cancer Society or Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
