Melvin E. Straley, 78 of Canfield died Tuesday evening at his son’s residence. Melvin was born August 1, 1945 in Austintown, a son of the late Fred and Hilda (Carnes) Straley and was a lifelong area resident.
He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School and had attended Youngstown State University. He was a proud United States Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. Melvin worked as an Industrail Engineer for Youngstown Metal Fab for 35 years, retiring in 2022. He played steel guitar for many years and was part of the Arden Harris and Countrymen group. Melvin was a train enthusiast and collected trains and enjoyed times sitting with his son, watching trains and reminiscing. Melvin was also a sports fan and cheered for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cleveland (Indians) Guardian and the Browns.
His wife, the former Mary F. Ausnehmer, whom he married February 27, 1971, die February 19, 2019. He leaves two sons, Robert (Melinda) Straley of Lake Milton, Donald Straley of Canfield; a daughter, Lori Hoon of Canfield and two grandchildren, Darryll (Kelly) Hoon and Brittany (Derek) Hoon. Melvin also leaves a great-grandson, Jonathan Straley. Besides his parents and his wife, Melvin was preceded in death by two brothers, Delbert Straley, Elton Straley and a grandson, Cody Straley.
There will be a Memorial Service at noon, Thursday April 25, 2024 at Old North Church for Melvin and his wife Mary. Friends may call for one hour prior to the service at the church. Melvin and his wife, Mary, together again!
