Nicholas Stephen Cvetan, 97, of North Lima, formerly of Canfield, passed away on January 19, 2025, at Aventura at Assumption Village. He was born on February 1, 1927, in Youngstown, the son of the late Stephen P. and Mary Theresa (Perkovic) Cvetan. Nicholas graduated from Chaney High School.
During World War II, he volunteered and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater. Following the war, he chose a military career with the United States Air Force, serving at various locations across the United States, Japan, and England. He was appointed to special assignments and attended the Foreign Service Institute at the Department of State in Washington, D.C. As a USAF Contract Representative, he worked with commercial airlines and served as an aircrew member. Fluent in Spanish, Nicholas’ duty stations included Lima, Peru; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. During the Dominican Crisis in the 1960s, he served two tours of duty as an Aircraft Maintenance Officer and Advisor to the Dominican Republic Air Force. Over the course of his military career, Nicholas received several professional achievement awards.
After retiring from the Air Force, he embarked on a second career with Ford Motor Company as an Import Coordinator in Lima, followed by a position at the Singer Company as National Service Manager, later becoming Marketing Administrative Services Manager. Nicholas then joined Chrysler Marine and Industrial, where he was Area Manager for Latin America and the Caribbean in Caracas, Venezuela, and was honored as International Sales Manager of the Year.
His life and travels took him across the globe, from Okinawa to Israel, and from Labrador to Tierra del Fuego, visiting 52 countries in total during his 22 years of Foreign Service. Nicholas had a deep passion for travel, genealogy, and was an avid reader of history and geography. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Air Force Sergeants Association, and the National Association for Uniformed Services.
Nicholas was married to Carmen M. Rospigliosi, with whom he had two children: a daughter, Cynthia Ann, and a son, Nicholas Stephen, Jr. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Marie (Peter) Kunovich.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Tuesday, January 28th at St. Michael Parish , Canfield, followed by burial at Calvary Cemetery with military honors. There will be no public calling hours.
