Gustavus-Richard R. Roscoe, age 89 passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 20, 2024 at Hospice House in Poland. Richard was born on March 11, 1935, the youngest son of Alexander and Judith (Britko) Roscoe. He was a 1952 graduate of Gustavus High School and a lifetime Gustavus resident.
Richard retired in 1986 from LTV Steel (Republic) in Warren where he worked as a mechanic, welder, pipefitter and millwright for 30 years, reaching his goal of retiring at the age of 50. He worked as a mechanic at Sharp Chevrolet in Kinsman and as an automatic screw machine operator at Glauer Brass. He was a member of St. Robert’s Catholic Church in Cortland.
Richard was the last of six Roscoe brothers to play on Gustavus High School Varsity Basketball team. Remarkably, the brothers played for 14 consecutive years, 1938-1952. When he was a Junior and Senior, he was elected to the Trumbull County Varsity League 4 Basketball Team. As a young man, Richard worked for his brothers, Charles and Edward at Roscoe’s Poultry on Steel Street in Youngstown, and also worked at Bloomfield Flea Market and Auction.
On September 1, 1956, Richard married Audrey Deimling and together they purchased their first farm in Gustavus in the 1960’s. In addition to and while working at Republic Steel, Richard was also a dairy farmer for several years. Along with his brother Stanley, they owned and operated Roscoe Brothers Inc., a fertilizer, lime and seed company in Gustavus which continues to operate to this day. They grain-farmed soybeans, wheat, and corn together, and did custom harvesting and trucking together as well, in Trumbull and Ashtabula Counties. Richard obtained his CDL license and drove one of the RBI’s semi’s over the road.
He was a member of the Ohio Farm Bureau, Trumbull County Grange, National Farmers Union, and the Soybean Council. He was a supporter of the Buckeye Sheriff’s Association and Trumbull County FOP.
Richard was a Director on the Trumbull County Agricultural Society “Fair board” for 37 consecutive years; he was vice president for three years and president for twelve years, he never lost a directors election. During his time on the Fair Board, he was nominated for Ohio Industry’s Hall of Fame award in 2009, there are only eight other individuals nominated in the entire state annually.
Besides his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Audrey Deimling Roscoe, who passed away on October 11, 2011; he is also preceded by his daughter, Brenda Procopio; his brothers, William, Eddie, Amil, George, Charles, Alexander Jr, Stanley and Cornell; his sisters, Ethel Hamilton and Elona Roscoe and a son-in-law, Jim Kalasky.
Richard is survived by his children, Debbie (Gary) Gaydosh; Richard (Dawn) Roscoe Jr.; Sharon Kalasky; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Richard loved to have his family and friends visit him on the farm and talk on the phone with him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12PM, Thursday July 25, 2024 at St. Robert’s Catholic Church, 4659 St. Rt. 46 in Cortland, with Father Ryan Furlong as Officiant. Friends and family may call Thursday July 25 11am-12pm at the church. Interment in All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta Township. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Roberts Church or given to the church for mass.
