On April 5, 1946, in Whirlwind, W.Va., the son of Earsel and Frankie Bryant Dalton was welcomed into the world. As a child, he spent his days playing outside in the foothills of West Virginia. He often spoke of the switchback roads, footpath trails, grapevine swings and creeks where he spent his time growing up. From an early age, Roger understood how difficult life can be and was deeply impacted by the loss of his mother. Near the age of 10, he began working at a dairy farm to help support his family and despite the hardships he faced, Roger did not let this take away his uncanny determination. As a young man, he found his way from Florida to Northeast Ohio, where he later became a steel worker. Being the charismatic and lively man that he was, he soon met his sweetie, Darlene, whom he asked to be his wife. They married on April 6, 1968, and welcomed their daughter, Lisa Arlene into the world on June 13, 1969.
Growing up with very little, Roger always knew and professed the importance of family. He made it a point to use what he had and generously shared with those he cared for. He graciously gave his love, time, and talents in any capacity he could. His days were spent finding ways to let others know he loved them and was thinking of them. The only thing that came before his family and grandchildren was God. Roger loved the Lord with all his heart and soul. He often spoke of a day when there would be no more sorrow or pain and perhaps a heaven that was filled with green pastures. His West Virginia roots stayed with him, as he would regularly tap and swing his feet to a bluegrass rendition of scripture. Surrounded by those he cared for and those who deeply love him, Roger entered that kingdom of heaven.
To be loved by Roger was a feeling that you were the only one in the world he cared for. His light-hearted and playful spirit live on each and every day through the lives of his wife Darlene Bryant (Nelson), brothers, sisters, daughter Lisa Arlene Baird (Bryant), grandchildren Megan Ashley Schmucker (Baird), Caitlyn Elizabeth Baird, and Ethan Tyler Baird, great-grandchildren, friends, fellow church members, and all of the lives he has touched.
