Ronald J. Totten of Fowler was born November 28, 1949 to Gordon and Marrietta Totten, in Ashtabula, Ohio. Known to childhood friends as Butch, he grew up in a large and boisterous family, the second of eight children. Neil (Sharen), Donnie, Ralph, Phil (Julie), Roger, Connie (Don) Wike, and Kim; their stories of childhood would fill the air over a campfire many nights. If you were lucky enough to hear these stories you knew that many great adventures were had and there was always love at the center.
He was an accomplished basketball player at Lakeview High School, graduating in 1968. His enjoyment of the game didn’t stop after his high school career and he spent many evenings officiating after obtaining a BS in Mechanical Engineering at YSU. He spent his career as a Draftsman, Design Engineer, Chief Engineer, Project Manager, and Sales Engineer.
Ron was an avid water skier and member of the Penn Ohio Ski Club. Most weekend mornings you could find Ron on Shenango Lake well before the rest of the world was awake, waiting for the fog to lift, and reveal water as smooth as glass. His love for skiing didn’t stop at the water's edge as he took up snow skiing when his children joined their high school ski club. He volunteered as an advisor and grew to love the sport; enjoying hitting the slopes long after they graduated.
In 2020 he married Sherry Tomlinson McFall, his long time love of 36 years. Together they enjoyed dancing, motorcycle rides, and exploring wineries; always enjoying the love of fine wine together. Ron and Sherry enjoyed many trips traveling to places as far as Hawaii and as fun as Disney. Many nights were spent together in the company of friends and family enjoying a party on the patio; good times, good music, and good wine was always in abundance!
Recently you would most likely find him in his garage working on the 57 Chevy he had for as long as anyone can remember. He rebuilt it beyond its original glory, every detail thought out with great care and attention.
Throughout his life, Ron was a proud father of three children Halley (Ryan) Majersky, Trevor (Brittany) Totten and Patrick (Amber) McFall. There are many things in Ron’s life he was good at, but being a father was by far his best accomplishment. Ron was always supportive, loving, and ready to help every time they needed anything.
Ron had nine grandchildren Tanis (Caylee), Seth, Derek, McKenzie, Brianna, Noah, Riann, Leila, and Griffin. He cherished each and every one of them, supported them in all of their hobbies, and was always there to cheer them on. They will each remember the lessons he patiently taught them, regardless of the extra time it took to complete a task, as he would coach them through learning the skill.
Surrounded by love, he passed away peacefully on October 10, 2024 at Hospice of the Valley. Ron was preceded in death by his parents Gordon and Marrietta, and brothers Donnie and Ralph.
A private event for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to cancer research or Hospice of the Valley would be preferred.
We are all better for having known him, we were blessed with more time than we thought we would have together, and Ron is now at peace.
