Royal "Roy" E. Oaks, age 81, of Warren, formerly of Cortland, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 19, 1929 in Vienna, a son of the late Norman Oaks and the late Gladys Evans Oaks. Roy was a veteran of the United States Marines, having served during the Korean War. He obtained the rank of Drill Sergeant and was a survivor of the "Frozen Chosin". Roy worked as a plate maker at Cox Lithograph in Warren for 35 years and later worked at the Paul Tessler golf course. He also shared his avid interest for the Cleveland Indians with his family. Roy is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Smalley Oaks, whom he married on March 24, 1951; one son, Terry (Catherine) Oaks of Cortland; one daughter, Denise (Bill) Theisler of Champion; one sister, Norma (Wiley) Humphries of Melbourne, Fla. and a sister in-law, Evelyn Oaks of Ocala, FL. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Steven Theisler, Danielle Theisler and Aaron (Kelly) Hamilton and two great grandchildren, Gracie and Ava. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence, Earl and Bill Oaks. Services were entrusted to the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel where private family services were held. Burial was in the Johnston Twp. Cemetery. The family request that donations be made in Royal's name to the Celtic Hospice, 3530 Belmont Ave, Suit 7, Youngstown 44515.
