Obituary

Dr. Bernard S. Shultz, 82, of Warren, died Wednesday, December 5, 2012 at Heritage Manor Retirement Community in Youngstown. He was born in 1930 in Warren, the son of Louis Benjamin and Sophia (Bellin) Shultz, and had lived in Warren all his life.

The Salutatorian of the January, 1949 Class of Warren G. Harding High School, Dr. Shultz was also a graduate of Western Reserve University and The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He then served as a dentist in the U.S. Navy, and later in private practice in Champion for forty years, retiring in 1998.

His memberships included the Corydon-Palmer Dental Society; the Ohio Dental Association; the American Dental Association; B'nai B'rith; Trumbull Mobile Meals; the American Red Cross; the St. Joseph Hospital auxiliary; AARP, where he served as an instructor of the 55-Alive Driver Safety Program; Zionist Organization of America; and Hadassah Associate. He had belonged to and served as president of the Warren Dental Society; the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity; Champion Kiwanis Club; Champion Lions Club; and Beth Israel Temple Center.

Elected to the Warren High Schools Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 1999, he served on the board of directors for Valley Counseling and was a blood donor for the Red Cross, having donated more than twelve gallons of blood and platelets. He served as a volunteer at St. Joseph Hospital for many years. He and his wife, Louise, also served as foster parents for six years.

After retiring from his dental practice, Dr. Shultz prepared tax returns for H&R Block and AARP, and he loved to tell people about it. Throughout his life, he was a great Cleveland Indians fan, and for many years, he and Louise sang in the Warren Civic Chorus.

A lifelong member of Beth Israel Temple Center, and a current member of Temple El Emeth in Liberty, he served as lay rabbi and cantor, teacher and ritual director. His great passions were conducting religious services for the synagogue, and educating the general community about Judaism.

Surviving are his wife, Louise Ruth (Yasinow) Shultz, whom he married December 26, 1953; two daughters, Miriam (Daniel) Rose of Beachwood, Ohio and Dr. Laura (Amichai) Ma'oz of Israel; two sons, Steven of Endicott, N.Y. and Barry (Tamar) Shultz of Israel ; seven grandchildren: Richard and Jeffrey Rose, Liran, Yardenne, and Sar-el Ma'oz, and Lior and Ben Shultz; four step-grandchildren; and a sister, Sonya M. Shultz of Cleveland Heights. A son, Toben Michael Shultz, preceded him in death.
