Frances L. Holwick, 90, died early Sunday morning at Blossom Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Salem.
She was born December 26, 1919 in Warren, the daughter of Earl L. and Goldie May (Householder) Grate, and she was a lifelong area resident before relocating to Arizona in 1975.
She was a 1937 graduate of Salem High School.
She worked as a clothing sales clerk for various department stores including Strouss's in Salem and Boardman and McKelvey's in downtown Youngstown before retiring.
She grew up with a love for horses and a passion for animals and she supported various animal humane organizations. She learned to bowl at her father's bowling lanes in Salem and became an avid lifetime bowler competing in Las Vegas to the age of 82. She also flew a plane at her father's Salem airport. When she first married she raced a midget racer in the "Powder Puff" area auto races.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church of Salem and later the First Christian Church of Sun City, Arizona.
Frances had a zest for life and an abiding faith in God and she will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She married William K. Holwick on January 13, 1941 and he preceded her in death February 21, 1988.
She is survived by two children; Kenneth E. (Cherie) Holwick of Salem and Cathy L. (Leonard) Gagliardi of Canfield; three grandchildren; Leonard Gagliardi, Jr., Jessica Anne Gagliardi, and Anna Marie (Bob) Betz; and two great grandchildren; Damien Betz and Lia Betz.
Besides her husband she was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Jean Holwick.
Friends may call from 4-6pm Friday at the Lane Funeral Home Canfield Chapel.
Frances will be laid to rest beside her husband at the Sunland Memorial Park Cemetery in Sun City, Arizona.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church of Salem, 1151 E. Sixth St., Salem, OH 44460.
