Obituary

Helen Elizabeth departed this world peacefully. She was taken home to heaven where her dear Lord and Savior Jesus Christ greeted her on May 6, 2019. She was born in Columbiana to her beloved parents Frank and Mary Hicks on February 25, 1925.

Helen received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University. Throughout her life she maintained her passion for love of music and teaching children. Helen taught piano and organ lessons for 64 years. She was a teacher of music in the Austintown Schools for 22 years. She both founded and directed the Austintown Boys Choir for 13 years. Several of her talented students have won prestigious awards in music.

As a ministry to the Lord she served as the organist at Columbiana Methodist, Grace Reformed Church, Poland Methodist and Youngstown Baptist Church.

Some of her accomplishments include; receiving a Martha Holding Jennings Scholar Award and Youngstown TMCA Woman of the Year Award. In 1992 a student selected her as a teacher who “made a difference in her life” and was then included in Who’s Who Among American Teachers. She belonged to the Youngstown Music Teachers Association and the Retired Teachers Association. Helen enjoyed traveling throughout Europe with fellow teachers that were also close friends.

Until recently she would meet each month for a luncheon with her childhood friends from Columbiana. She was an avid reader of Amish and mystery novels. Each morning she would read her daily devotionals and Bible.

She is survived by her daughter Gretchen Price (Brad), granddaughters Stephanie Kennedy, Christina Bonarigo (Joe) and great grandchildren Caitlin and Grace Kennedy and Joey and Jenna Bonarigo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and son Robert “Bobby” Cline.

Helen was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and had deep faith while living on promises of the Lord.
