Marie Louise Hood passed away at her home Saturday afternoon, she had been ill since January 11, 2006.
She was born June 5, 1916 in Niles a daughter of the late Harry Edward and Sadie Gertrude (Hannold) Dean Sr. and has resided in Mineral Ridge since 1938.
She was a 1934 Graduate of Niles McKinley High School, the 1934 Healthiest Senior Girl at Niles McKinley High School and was a 1933 Volunteer Red Cross in Niles.
Marie was a long time member of the Ohltown United Methodist Church, Dames of Malta, Women’s Benefit Association, North Jackson Keenagers, and the Mahoning and Trumbull Genealogy Societies.
She had worked at Kroger’s Store as a cashier in the 1930’s, Niles Steel Products, Packard Electric and Holt’s Printing. She had also been active in 4-H as an Advisor and Girls Scouts. Was a foster parent for several children with Children’s Services.
She had a passion for dogs and all kinds of animals, enjoyed working in the produce garden, swimming, ceramics, bicycling, sitting on her swing on her porch deck for hours and reading/studying medical books. She also enjoyed horses. Was a very generous and sentimental person.
Before the death of her husband Paul, she enjoyed traveling, going camping at the family cabin in Benezette, PA and welcoming the grandchildren for overnighters. She enjoyed watching old westerns and the Young and the Restless soap opera. In her later years she enjoyed watching out the big picture window of her home.
Her husband Paul Eugene Hood whom she married January 1, 1938, passed away on January 24, 1980.
Marie moved into her present home in 1947 where she raised her five children: Richard E. (Cindy Gregory) Hood with whom she made her home, AnnaMae (Norman) Hunt of North Jackson, Donald E. (Janet) Hood of Mineral Ridge, Sandra L. (David A) Coy of Hillsboro, and Suzanne (Bill Pitoscia) Harklerode of Mineral Ridge. She is also survived by; one sister Dorothea M. Dean of Niles; one brother William Dean Sr. or Port St. Lucie, FL; seven grandchildren: Peggy (Jim) O’Neill of North Jackson, Paul (Deanne) Hunt of North Jackson, Deborah (John) Kajic of Harrisburg, PA, Cynthia (Steven) Koffman of Cape Coral, FL, Kevin S. Hood of North Jackson, Gregory D. Hood of Leavittsburg, and Ronald L. Harklerode Jr. (Jaimie Delp) of Beloit; and four great grandchildren: Jason James O’Neill of North Jackson, Kyle Norman O’Neill of North Jackson, Hannah Marie Koffman of Cape Coral, FL, Ellie Anne Koffman of Cape Coral, FL.
She also leaves many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were one brother, Harry “Edward” Dean Jr., one sister Sarah, and a niece, Carolyn (Dean) Smith.
A public memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Ohltown United Methodist Church on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. Guests will be received one half hour before service at the church.
